Greg's Canadian Diary / Sunday 7th September 2008

Vancouver
Weather: sunny & clear, + 20o C

Early wakeup call! The day started at 7.30 a.m. when we went by bus to the ‘Vancouver Aquarium’. There the volunteer crew awaited us for breakfast.

Three big round tables were placed in front of the huge panes of the Beluga pool! We were fascinated by these giants of the sea. You could even forget to chew your breakfast while watching the swimming of the three Beluga Whales. And we were extremely favored guests, as the female Beluga had a three month old small baby calf by her side! This little girl even had her ‘breakfast’ while swimming next to her mother and drinking milk.

This was very impressive to my humans, as well as the entire atmosphere in this wide room. Having breakfast face to face with these three swimming white majestic beings was a fantastic experience for everyone.

We were told that the elder female Beluga was brought to the Vancouver Aquarium by fishermen. She has been hurt and caught in their fishing nets. The Aquarium’s specialist vets saved her life, but she has to pay a high price for staying alive. She will always have to stay in captivity. She now is no longer able to live in the liberty of the wide ocean.

Maybe she has found her luck in the Aquarium? Why? Well an elder male Beluga was already living there when the newcomer arrived in his pool. They must have fallen in love, as after normal breeding time, she gave birth to a calf. This daughter became the mother of the little one we saw.

But time went by and we had to leave this magic room. We were shown all around by the very friendly and expert volunteers. What a terrific beginning!

On we went by coach:

Across Stanley Park/ Lion’s Gate Bridge/West Vancouver/ Suspension Bridge – we did it! Yeah, even mum crossed the swaying bridge! / Tree-Top-Walk – again mum made it! / back to Stanley Park/Look- Out- Point/Totem Poles/Vancouver sightseeing tour/China Town/Gas Town > back to our hotel.

Daddy tried to get a telephone connection to Germany, but he failed several times. Very frustrated he surrendered to the Canadian telephone system!

We went to the Starbuck’s next corner and had Cappuccino with blueberry bars. Yummy!

Back in the hotel mum made a phone call to whom? Yes, to my dearest Opossum friend Posy! Mum arranged a meeting in the evening with Posy’s house apes Venge and Ken.
I got my fur brushed up and my clothes tidy and became more nervous by every minute! Thinking: Will she like me? Am I properly dressed for our first meeting in real life? Will she be friendly to me?

A couple of minutes before leaving, I became unsure of myself and told my humans: I won’t come with you! But what can a small teddy bear do against human power? You’ve got it: Nothing! Offering resistance has been useless!

My fur felt weak when we entered the lobby. Being held in mum’s secure hands I looked out for Posy. And there she was sitting on Venge’s lap in real fur: Posy!

She was wearing a beautiful long white dress with lace and a light purple silk scarf wrapped around her head and shoulders. What a BEAUTY! She smiled at me and said “Hi Greg! Happy to meet you. Welcome to Vancouver!”

Then we lost our reserve by falling in each other’s arms, hugging and kissing her paws…pure joy! It was an unbelievable experience to meet ‘fur to fur and paw to paw’!

Meanwhile our humans talked together – to be honest mum talked, daddy…hmmm… he said hardly a word, he’s so shy talking in English…and…- and went to the hotel’s restaurant where we had reserved a nice table for four persons hihihi…and two ‘fur persons’!
The ‘fur persons’ where placed ON the table, the four persons – I can’t stop laughing…hihihihi…, sorry- at the table!

I handed over my presents for Posy: pink shaded velvet hibiscus blooms for her ears, a friendship German/Berlin flag badge, a Lufthansa badge and a small Berlin Bear with ‘Berlin’ stitched on his chest and a Berlin book mark calendar.

She gave me a self made welcome card with her photo. Beautiful!

Posy and I were sitting on the table watching the humans. We were holding paws and couldn’t believe that our dreams had come true! What a great evening! We talked endlessly, as well as the humans did, too.

The excellent dinner:
Fresh bread with homemade paprika-pepper-butter
2 x Halibut with exotic greens
Lamb steak with greens and potatoes
Vegetarian meal
Desserts:
2 x Chocolate muffins with strawberry ice cream
2 x 3 variations of sorbet
They all had some beer except the driver. The time flew away…….and the time for good bye came too soon. But we had to wake up at 5.30 a.m.!

The humans arranged another meeting after our return from the round trip. I hugged and kissed Posy’s paws and cheeks… but nevertheless some tears were rolling down on our fur.

We waved farewell… until Posy got out of sight.

What a fantastic day, crowned with this meeting fur to fur with Posy! She is such a wonderful friend and an Opossum beauty!

We went to bed immediately and felt asleep as soon as we touched the mattresses.

In my dreams a dark blue furry face looked at me and smiled: Posy! Chrch…….
